If the Detroit Purple Wings’ most up-to-date sport reminded us of something, it’s that you simply by no means know which approach a saga would possibly swing.
Enjoying his first sport of the season on Tuesday, Dylan Larkin not solely turned jeers to cheers with a 1-1-2 efficiency within the Wings’ 5-3 win over the Senators, he acted just like the captain he was when he bodily engaged Ottawa ahead Ridly Greig after the latter hit Larkin’s teammate Alex DeBrincat at centre ice.
He might want change, however Larkin is enjoying arduous the place his skates are proper now.
In fact, one pair of blades that is still vacant within the Purple Wings dressing room is the massive set belonging to six-foot-six defenceman Simon Edvinsson. Whereas Larkin — who requested a transfer out of Michigan final spring — has returned to the fold (for now), Edvinsson — an unsigned RFA — is skating in his native Sweden whereas all of us await the following transfer.
As famous, it’s inconceivable to know what twists are across the nook and it’s nonetheless conceivable Edvinsson and interim GM Shawn Horcoff attain an settlement to maintain the 23-year-old in Detroit. That mentioned, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on Saturday that, at this level, Edvinsson would favor to land with a brand new group.
If we assume, for the second, that Larkin and Edvinsson each will finally be moved, it’s price considering how one commerce might impression the opposite. From the time we first realized Larkin want to be dealt, we’ve additionally been beneath the impression the Purple Wings — in the event that they had been to deal Larkin — wished a centre they may instantly put within the lineup in return.
Might an Edvinsson deal alter Horcoff’s method, although? If Detroit might land a centre for Edvinsson, would the group then turn out to be extra amenable to different commerce packages for Larkin? There’s even some latest notion the Wings — initially regarded as dead-set towards any massive step again — might embrace the concept an organizational reset is required, one thing Sportsnet’s Frank Seravalli mused about on Wednesday.
One of the best-laid plans have already got gone off the rails in Detroit and the membership should contemplate all choices because it navigates these making an attempt circumstances. With that in thoughts, let’s spotlight some up-and-coming centres the Wings might goal in a deal involving Edvinsson.
Caleb Desnoyers, Utah Mammoth
The Mammoth, justifiably, are a group we marvel about any time an actual needle-mover — younger, previous or in between — turns into out there and earlier this week, Seravalli mentioned on the Frankly Hockey present that Utah is serious about Edvinsson, who was taken sixth general in 2021.
The Mammoth have been aggressive upgrading their group, including veteran forwards Vincent Trocheck and Anders Lee over the summer season because the squad makes an attempt to construct on making the playoffs final spring.
In fact, one of many first massive swings the membership took when it moved to Utah in 2024 was buying defenceman Mikhail Sergachev — at present day-to-day after taking a puck up excessive on Tuesday — from Tampa Bay. Add Edvinsson to a blue line that additionally consists of promising up-and-comer Dmitri Simashev and veteran MacKenzie Weegar — acquired on the 2026 commerce deadline — and also you’d have one heck of a again finish that includes plenty of measurement and diverse instrument kits.
Desnoyers is a giant chip to give up, however the Mammoth have younger stud Logan Cooley on the high of the centre chart. Given each Trocheck and Nick Schmaltz can even play within the center — with Barrett Hayton a serviceable 3C — you may think about GM Invoice Armstrong biting down and giving up Desnoyers.
For Detroit, nabbing the No. 4 decide from the 2025 NHL Draft — a man with nice two-way potential who’s starting his professional journey within the AHL this fall — would offer a serious constructing block down the center.
Berkly Catton, Seattle Kraken
Seattle landed an thrilling blue-line prospect in Chase Reid on the 2026 draft, however the again finish stays a transparent place of want. You possibly can in all probability say the identical factor about a number of areas of the ice in Seattle, however the membership does have a handful of centres who possess totally different levels of potential.
Catton was the eighth-overall decide in 2024 and if he’d been on a transparent upward trajectory since then, we’re in all probability not having this dialog. In fact, there’s nonetheless loads of potential within the participant, though the 20-year-old hasn’t exploded on the scene but.
Catton, although not massive, is a talented participant with a giant motor. When you think about Seattle has centre Matty Beniers within the combine and playmaking pivot Jake O’Brien — the eighth decide in 2025 — starting his professional profession within the AHL this fall, the Kraken could be dealing from a relative place of power. And don’t neglect about Shane Wright, a right-shot centre who nonetheless has middle-six enchantment.
Who is aware of, possibly Wright could be a man who piques Detroit’s curiosity in a bigger deal, too.
James Hagens, Boston Bruins
Hagens has had a pleasant begin to his rookie 12 months with two targets in 4 video games for the Bruins. In a way, it will be awfully powerful to surrender Hagens — the seventh-overall decide in 2025 — when the B’s are searching for their subsequent technology of offence.
That mentioned, does anyone want to inform Boston what a huge defender who can do some little bit of every part can imply for a franchise?
OK, we’re not saying Edvinsson could be the second coming of Zdeno Chara, however the potential for him to be an all-situations stud who performs 23 minutes often and 27 when it actually counts is there. Boston has a right-shot stud in Charlie McAvoy, who turns 29 in December. How good would it not be to know you might have Edvinsson probably anchoring one other pair from the left aspect and able to take over because the go-to workhorse when McAvoy turns the nook into his 30s.
The rub for Detroit is Hagens has performed the wing throughout his brief, six-game NHL profession and there are some doubts as as to whether the five-foot-11 American would thrive up the center matching up with one of the best centres within the NHL.
Nonetheless, if he hits his offensive ceiling, does it actually matter which place he’s doing it from?
Dalibor Dvorsky, St. Louis Blues
The Blues made a giant transfer to get Mason McTavish on the draft, then ended any hypothesis they’d transfer on from Robert Thomas by making him captain earlier than the season.
If Thomas and McTavish are entrenched because the membership’s high two centres for a very long time, the place does that depart Dvorsky? The 21-year-old was taken tenth general in 2023 and, after netting 12 targets as a rookie final 12 months, has already potted a pair in three outings this 12 months.

32 Ideas: The Podcast
Hockey followers already know the title, however this isn’t the weblog. From Sportsnet, 32 Ideas: The Podcast with NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman and Kyle Bukauskas is a weekly deep dive into the most important information and interviews from the hockey world.
This is able to be concerning the Blues dealing from an space of power — in addition they chosen well-regarded centre Tynan Lawrence eleventh general in June — to bulk up elsewhere. St. Louis has some high quality younger items on the blueline — Philip Broberg and rookie righty Adam Jiricek amongst them — however including Edvinsson would take issues to an entire different stage and certain add the participant with one of the best profession forward of him.
Detroit would wish to insulate Dvorsky whereas he develops, however the pedigree is there for him to turn out to be a great top-six C.
Kent Johnson, Columbus Blue Jackets
Johnson has been in commerce rumours for what looks like ages now and the Jackets definitely would wish to sweeten the pot to get one thing over the road for Edvinsson. Nonetheless, the fingers are there — Johnson scored 24 targets and 57 factors in 68 contests two seasons in the past — and if Columbus isn’t his long-term residence, someone goes to present him one other shot.
You marvel if he might observe the trail of Trevor Zegras, one other expert — however not massive — centre/winger who discovered his finest self in his second NHL cease.
As for Columbus, Edvinsson would offer one heck of a contingency plan — and added flexibility — if the membership is pushed right into a spot the place it should commerce the reigning Norris Trophy winner, Zach Werenski.
As each the Wings and Jackets can attest to, discovering the proper deal for big-time gamers is not any small job and you could discover each doable avenue earlier than pulling the set off.
