Communities mark Indigenous Peoples’ Day – Nationwide

OTTAWA – Occasions are being held throughout the nation to mark the thirtieth Nationwide Indigenous Peoples’ Day on Sunday — a day meant to honour the tradition, histories and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis folks.

The day coincides with the summer time solstice — the longest day of the 12 months — and holds deep cultural significance for a lot of Indigenous teams. It’s the fruits of Indigenous Peoples Month, which is noticed each June.

Nationwide Indigenous Peoples’ Day, previously Nationwide Aboriginal Day, was proclaimed in 1996 by Gov. Gen. Romeo LeBlanc after years of advocacy from Indigenous teams.

Métis Nationwide Council president Victoria Pruden will mark the day on the Rhythms of the Homeland occasion in Ottawa’s Minto Park. It’s being billed as a celebration of Métis meals, music and dance.

Indigenous Providers Minister Mandy Gull-Masty will attend the Summer time Solstice Indigenous Pageant in Ottawa, which contains a competitors powwow, culinary experiences and academic programming.

Wanuskewin Heritage Park close to Saskatoon will host a Nationwide Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebration with conventional dancing, drum performances and storytelling.


Ambleside Park in Vancouver will welcome an occasion with dwell music, canoe actions and a conventional salmon dinner cooked over an open fireplace.
