Zoë Taylor’s award-winning seashore volleyball profession didn’t begin with a grand plan. It started together with her mother, Katina Taylor, who wouldn’t cease signing her daughter up for actions. Practically a decade later, it has led her to set up Dig Deeper, South Florida’s first nonprofit seashore volleyball and life abilities camp for underserved youth.

“She pressured me into it,” Zoë Taylor, 20, says with fun, recalling how her mom cycled her by dance, basketball, soccer — virtually each sport possible — earlier than volleyball lastly caught. By eighth grade, Zoë discovered her sport. However when COVID arrived, and gymnasiums closed, Taylor took her ardour to the sand.

“I acquired the chance to play on the seashore, and I made a decision that I wished to pursue this for my collegiate profession,” says Taylor.

That pivot, born of a pandemic and a stretch of South Florida shoreline, led Zoë to back-to-back Miami Herald Seashore Volleyball Participant of the 12 months honors, a dedication to LSU, a switch to Arizona State, and a sophomore season competing on the Division I stage. For the daughter of Professional Soccer Corridor of Famer Jason Taylor, who spent 15 years within the NFL, elite competitors is the household language.

However successful on the court docket was simply the beginning. Throughout Taylor’s senior 12 months at St. Thomas Aquinas Excessive College, as she watched her mom pour herself into the household’s youth sports activities nonprofit, Champions4Character, Taylor was impressed to provide again in her personal manner.

“I feel it got here to be by seeing my mother and wanting to provide children a chance to play the game I liked,” she says.

That one thing is Dig Deeper, which is now heading into its third 12 months.

On June 4, 65 women from the Boys & Women Membership will spend the day on the sand with Taylor and ten NCAA seashore volleyball athletes she’s recruited from packages throughout the nation.

The game is the entry level. The mission, nonetheless, goes additional. “We educate them life abilities — methods to be assured, methods to make new associates, methods to be taught new abilities — and simply give them a constructive area to get lively and train.”

For ladies who could by no means have touched a volleyball, a single day on that seashore can reframe what they consider is feasible for themselves. And for Taylor, the camp’s development has been probably the most significant half. “It simply retains being extra particular every time,” she says.

Women from the primary two years hold coming again, some now of their early twenties. “They only need to continue to learn,” Taylor says. “They’re all open to getting higher.”

Past South Florida, Taylor aspires to launch Dig Deeper in Arizona and past.

“I stay there mainly half of the 12 months,” she says of Tempe, “so I need to give again to my neighborhood there.” “I need to convey it across the U.S.,” she says. “Giving all these deserving children the prospect to be taught the game of seashore volleyball and see if it sparks one thing nice for them is driving me to succeed in farther.”
