Veteran actress Sharmila Tagore will be attending Cannes this year. She is going to be seen at a special screening. She will attend the screening of Satyajit Ray’s Aranyer Din Ratri, which she starred in with Soumitra Chatterjee.

The special screening will take place on May 27, 2025. The actress’ team has also noted that there is a story behind the filming of the movie. The wonderful story goes that she bunked the shooting of Aradhana to shoot Aranyer Din Ratri in the jungles. This development also meant that the iconic song Mere Sapno Ki Rani in Aradhana had to be shot without her and later they shot her montages in a studio, because she left Aradhana’s shooting to be with Ray’s film.

Interestingly, Tagore made her acting debut in Satyajit Ray’s critically acclaimed Bengali epic drama Apur Sansar (1959). She went on to collaborate with Ray on numerous other films, including Devi (1960), Nayak (1966), Aranyer Din Ratri (1970) and (Seemabaddha (1971) – establishing herself as one of the most iconic actresses in Bengali cinema.

About Aranyer Din Ratri

The movie is based on Sunil Gangypadhyay’s novel of the same name. Apart from Sharmila and Soumitra, it stars Subhendu Chatterjee, Samit Bhanja, Rabi Ghosh, Kaberi Bose, Aparna Sen and Simi Garewal. It released on January 16, 1970 in India and March 14, 1973, in the USA.

The plot unfolds around a group of four friends, who have their own share of differences. However, they bond deeply. The four friends are all educated and come from different layers of society. Their deep interest to escape the daily grind of the tiring city life is explored well. It makes them thoroughly wander in forests and tribal lands.
