UNLV WOMEN’S GOLF NEWS: Rebels Among Loaded Field At Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – No. 39 UNLV women’s golf will tee off its spring slate Sunday morning in Palos Verdes, California, at the 23rd annual Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. The tournament is hosted by Ohio State University at the Palos Verdes Golf Club outside of Palm Springs and traditionally features the top teams in the country each year.

The 2018 version is no different as 17 of 18 teams participating are ranked in Golf Week’s Top-50, including seven in the top-10 and the current No. 1 ranked team, UCLA. The three-day 54-hole tournament will take place on a par 71, 6,017 yard course, with one round being played each day. Sunday and Monday will start at 9 a.m. while Tuesday’s final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.

The highlight of the fall for UNLV was the performance at their home-hosted tournament, the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, at Boulder Creek Golf Club in October. As a team, the Rebels shot a 17-under over three rounds to win by 10 strokes, their second win at their own tournament in the last three years and third overall in the 16 year history.

Junior Elizabeth Prior, who enters the spring ranked No. 31 individually in the country (Golf Week), missed the first two tournaments due to a medical issue, but didn’t show any rust in the first competition of her junior year as she turned in a career-best tournament to take medalist honors at Boulder Creek. The Surrey, England, native carded a three-round 67-66-67 to win at 16-under, which is tied for the lowest 54-hole score in program history.

Entering the spring, UNLV is ranked in both the Golfweek and Golfstat rankings at No. 39 and No. 33, respectively.

After Palos Verdes, the Rebels will return to Las Vegas, where they will play two of their next three tournaments, beginning with the Rebel Beach Feb. 26 and 27. UNLV is teaming up with Long Beach State for the two-day tournament at Spanish Trail Golf Club for the inaugural Rebel Beach Invitational. Two weeks after that tournament, the Scarlet and Gray will compete locally at the Jackrabbit Invitational, hosted by South Dakota State University.

THE FIELD: The 2018 Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge will feature a field of 18 teams, with 17 ranked in Golf Week’s Top-50, 11 in the Top-25 and seven in the Top-10.
