LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men’s golf team will open its spring season this week at the 42nd John A. Burns Intercollegiate, which will be played at the Wailua Golf Course (par 72, 6,991 yards) in Lihue, Kauai, Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 15-17.
THE FIELD: The 20-team field includes: Arizona, BYU, CSUN, Fresno State, Grand Canyon, Hawaii, Long Beach State, New Mexico, North Carolina, Northern Colorado, Saint Mary’s, Texas A&M, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, UNC-Wilmington, UNLV, Utah, UTEP, Virginia and Washington State.
THE FORMAT: The 54-hole stroke-play tournament will consist of 18 holes each day.
TEE TIMES: Each day will begin with an 8 a.m. HT shotgun start.
THE LINEUP: Competing for UNLV will be senior Shintaro Ban, junior Harry Hall, freshman Jack Trent, freshman Garrick Higgo and sophomore Justin Kim. Sophomore Justin Chong will compete as an individual.
LAST YEAR: UNLV finished in third place at last year’s Burns Intercollegiate, five shots back of team champion Virginia. Hall and Ban both finished in the top 10 individually – tied for third at 10-under and seventh at 8-under, respectively. Texas A&M’s Chandler Phillips earned medalist honors at 15-under 201.
THIS YEAR: UNLV competed in five tournaments during the fall. The Rebels placed fourth in two events, the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and the William H. Tucker in Albuquerque, New Mexico, both in September. Ban turned in UNLV’s top individual performance of the fall as he earned medalist honors at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Alabama in October. He has recorded a total of three top-10 finishes in five events this season.
NOTABLE: UNLV is the two-time defending Mountain West champions. The squad won a NCAA Regional last year and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA finals. Ban and Hall are both 2017 All-Mountain West Team honorees, and Ban earned honorable mention All-America. In addition, Ban was named an All-America Scholar.
