Gordan Brixi and Ben Sawaia will become Rebels starting in 2020-21

LAS VEGAS ( – The UNLV men’s golf program has received signed commitments from Gordan Brixi and Ben Sawaia to join the Rebel golf program, head coach Dwaine Knight announced Friday.

Brixi, originally from Prague, Czech Republic, will come to Las Vegas by way of Potomac, Maryland. He finished third in qualifier for the PGA Tour’s Las Vegas event the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in 2019, just missing a spot in the field (playoff). In June, he won the Slovak Amateur Tour title and was the top amateur at the Prague Challenge on the European Challenge Tour in May.

“Gordan’s path to college is a bit unusual,” Knight said. “He has played many events all over the world, including professional events as an amateur. He just missed playing in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open here in Las Vegas with (Rebel junior) Jack Trent. He is a long hitter, very good ball striker and has a knack for posting low scores. He is also an excellent student with straight A’s.”

In October of 2018, Brixi was the runner-up at the Middle Atlantic Amateur in Maryland and earlier that year, he won the Kram Junior Open. He also was the runner-up at the 2018 Russian International Amateur.

Sawaia, from Henderson, Nevada, attends Coronado High School. He is ranked second in the state by the Junior Golf Scoreboard and was a first-team all-state honoree his first three years of high school (2017-19). He was also a two-time team state champion member (2018, 2019).

“Ben comes from a great golf family here in Las Vegas,” Knight said. “His dad, Joe, is a coach and has been very involved in junior golf all throughout his career. We are really excited to have Ben as a part of our future. He has a solid game and at the beginning of his career will be quite a competitor.”

Sawaia has recorded three top-four finishes in AJGA Open events and is a four-time IMG Junior World Qualifier (2016-19). He was also a 2019 SNJGA Junior Americas Cup and Border War Team selection. In addition to golf, he also plays soccer at Coronado (2016-19).

Brixi and Sawaia will join the Rebel program in fall 2020.
