LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV men’s basketball team (16-7, 5-5 MW), winner of two of its last three games and three of its last five, will travel to Reno, Nev., to face intrastate rival and No. 23 UNR on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 8 p.m. at Lawlor Events Center.
The Mountain West game is also a part of the Governor’s Series, presented by NV Energy and Barrick Gold, which is a head-to-head athletic and academic challenge between the two Silver State schools. The winner of the season series in men’s basketball will earn three points toward the final score. UNLV has won four of the first five years of the overall competition.
UNLV is coming off a heartbreaking overtime loss at Boise State (93-91) on Saturday. Prior to that, it went 2-0 at home with wins over San Diego State (88-78) on Jan. 27 and San Jose State (76-67) last Wednesday. The victory over SDSU snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Aztecs. UNLV shot 58.6 percent from the field in that contest, which was the highest by a San Diego State opponent since 2006-07 – a stretch of 11 seasons and 403 games. The win over the Spartans earned UNLV the regular-season series sweep.
The Runnin’ Rebels are 3-2 in Mountain West play on the road, while UNR is 11-0 overall at home this year. UNLV went 11-2 during non-conference play this season with its only two losses coming in overtime – at Northern Iowa and vs. Arizona (now ranked No. 13) at home.
The Runnin’ Rebels are sixth in the country in field-goal percentage (51.0), eighth in scoring (86.0 ppg), 21st in rebounding (39.87 rpg) and 29th in assists per game (16.9). Individually, Brandon McCoy and Shakur Juiston rank in the top 24 in the country in rebounding. McCoy is 18th (10.0 rpg), while Juiston is 24th (9.7). UNLV is the only team in the nation with two top-24 rebounders. McCoy ranks 12th in double-doubles with 12, while Juiston is 40th with nine. Senior guard Jordan Johnson is 25th in the nation in assists with 5.9 apg.
Wednesday’s game will be televised by CBS Sports Network with Brent Stover and Bob Wenzel calling the action. Jon Sandler and former Runnin’ Rebel Robert Smith will handle the UNLV radio call, which may be heard live on ESPN Radio 1100 AM/100.9 FM and online via the UNLV Gameday App and TuneIn (link at UNLVRebels.com).
