LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV softball sophomore Charlie Masterson has been named College Sports Madness’ Mountain West Pitcher of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday.
Masterson, a local product out of Boulder City, Nevada, was instrumental in helping the Rebels go 4-1 on opening weekend for the first time since 2010. The right-hander made two starts and pitched a total of 14.0 innings, allowing just two runs – one earned – on nine hits while striking out seven.
Starting in the circle against North Dakota State on Friday, Masterson shut down the Bison for nine innings, giving up one earned run on five hits and picking up the win after the Rebels rallied in the bottom of the ninth for the walk-off extra-inning win.
The following night against Utah Valley, Masterson recorded her first career shutout, blanking the Wolverines while giving up just four hits in the eventual 8-0 five-inning victory. Masterson also delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the fifth, with her single to left field sending the eighth and winning run across the plate.
The two performances marked the first two complete games of her career. Her 0.64 ERA is currently fourth in the Mountain West.
The Scarlet and Gray return to action this weekend, hosting the Marucci Desert Classic, Feb. 15-19. They will open up the weekend Friday at 1:30 p.m. against Idaho State at Eller Media Stadium.
