Originally from Perth, Australia, shooting guard is first UNLV signee under new head coach T.J. Otzelberger

LAS VEGAS ( – The UNLV men’s basketball program has received a signed national letter of intent from Jonah Antonio on the first day of the spring signing period, head coach T.J. Otzelberger announced Wednesday. Antonio plans to enroll at UNLV this summer and will be a junior for the 2019-20 season.
The first commitment at UNLV under Otzelberger, Antonio is a 6-foot-5-inch guard from Perth, Australia. He is coming to UNLV from South Plains College in Levelland, Texas, where he scored 11.6 points per game last season as a sophomore while making 40.9 percent of his 3-point shots. He also collected 4.5 rebounds and averaged 1.9 assists per game. The Texans went 28-6 overall during the 2018-19 season, advancing to the Final Four of the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament.
“Jonah’s passion and enthusiasm for the game of basketball are truly unique,” Otzelberger said. “He has worked at his craft and has become a phenomenal shooter and good defender. He has great character and his work ethic and shooting ability will allow him to come in and contribute to our team immediately.”
Antonio attended Mount St. Mary’s in Emmitsburg, Maryland, from 2016-18. After redshirting in 2016-17, he started 31 of 32 games as a freshman during the 2017-18 season. He averaged 11.3 points and 3.8 rebounds per game, leading the team with 90 made 3-pointers. He was named to the Northeast Conference All-Rookie Team and was the league’s Rookie of the Week twice.
In high school, Antonio was a 40-percent 3-point shooter as a senior at Sunrise Christian Academy and led the team to a 27-7 record. He played club basketball for the Stirling Senators in the Southern Basketball League in Australia.
